Biographical Note:
Morris L. Wardell (1889-1957) began his service with the University of Oklahoma as Assistant Professor of History on February 1, 1925. Previously, he had received his B.A. from OU in 1919 and his M.A. from Harvard in 1922.
In 1927 Wardell became the faculty advisor to the honorary freshmen fraternity, Phi Eta Sigma. He served as advisor until his death on February 5, 1957. (Pete Kyle McCarter, Vice President under President George Lynn Cross, assumed this role.) Wardell also served as Acting Dean of Men between 1927 and 1929. In 1929 he became Associate Professor of History which he followed with a year's sabbatical leave.
In 1935 he became Professor of History and later in 1936 received his Ph. D. from the University of Chicago. Between 1937 and 1941 Wardell served President William Bennett Bizzell as Assistant to the President. He returned to teaching history upon Joseph August Brandt's ascension to the presidency.
Between April 12, 1943 and November 1, 1945 Wardell was appointed Acting Director of the Extension Division and also served for a time as Director of the Summer Session. On January 1, 1946 he became a David Ross Boyd Professor of history. On February 5, 1957, Wardell died.
